Two distinct populations of this species, one in the northern Atlantic and the other in the southern Indian Ocean, were believed to constitute potential subspecies. The Indian Ocean population, namely the Ramari's beaked whale, was identified as a separate species in 2021.
The species attain a length of around 5.3 meters (17 feet). Females weigh 1,400 kilograms (3,100 lb), while the males weigh 1,010 kilograms (2,230 lb).
